Kollektiva. was founded in 2018 and is comprised of international freelance dance and performance artists based in Hamburg. Consisting completely of women, the collective uses the diverse artistic backgrounds of its members, within a heterarchical system, to reach new possibilities of movement through research. With a contemporary dance basis, classical ballet roots, urban and afrodance influences, martial arts interests, and Feldenkrais expertise, the women of Kollektiva. find similarity through their feminine experiences. The differences in movement knowledge of the collective make the quality of their work richer, allowing for the open exchange of ideas on the stage, in the studio, and in interaction with the free scene in Hamburg. Two bodies. Standing in space, looking for direction. A female and a male body exploring their possibilities of communication, expression, trust and freedom. An invisible connection is created. Is it stable, carried, detached, or scary? In an attempt to share (body) history and (it’s) weight, dancers Nemanja Bošković and Lina Lev put themselves at risk of falling, letting go and the option of re-framing. Inspired by the exhibition "Frauenkörper" ("Female Bodies") at the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg, they examined the relationship between man and woman, painter and model, and the process of attributing gender roles. The project was supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture Baden Württemberg, the Ministry of Culture Heidelberg and INTER-ACTIONS / Edan Gorlicki. Habits, rituals, routines; they are all inescapable parts of human nature. Within these natural rhythms we find comfort and security, but also often melancholy. In disorder our minds learn to listen to the moment through freedom and invention of the self with each new breath. It is a constant search for safety while still being open to growth. What is it that you wish for in your life, the ability to give in to the chaos of everyday or the control to find clarity in a common routine? As a newly formed collective of women with diverse movement backgrounds, Kollektiva. found searching for the balance between ritual and spontaneity gave the opportunity to explore mutual understanding and support between newly-united minds. Reeperbahn Festival 2019, Hamburg Things in disorder naturally move towards order. This implicit tendency is followed on the most basic levels within our bodies, then shutters outward to our behaviors and interactions in everyday life. United not through our cultural backgrounds or artistic histories, we found a chance for unfettered communication through our feminine identities as a collective. Being women, we are subject to a different type of control and freedom based on the relationship between our personal narratives and societal expectations. In this duality we can explore all aspects of femininity and whether there is a place for gender in the modern world. How does lockdown, wearing mouth and nose protection and the minimum distance of 150 centimeters affect our bodies and our psyche on a collective and individual level? Proximity and the feeling of comfort – or discomfort – which come along with the feeling of being close or far away of each other are presented in the work of the female dance ensemble. Bodies, near or far, are bound by experiences that go beyond knowing. The short piece shown at the Reeperbahn Festival takes up freedom of movement and the topic of social distancing in a playful and abstract way. They also deal with the topic of femininity and being a woman – on an individual, collective and social level.
